Areas We Assist In
The rape statistics have risen by 7% (reported) in the recent SAPS Crime stats report. At iThemba Rape and Support Centres we play a vital role in counselling and supporting victims of rape through the harrowing process of reporting the crime and the emotional aftermath. We also work with law enforcers to protect the rights of victims, and to equip society and law enforcement agencies with the information they need in order to be able to treat the victims with fairness to respect their dignity and human rights
When bad things happen, it can take a lot to get over the pain. Trauma, including one-time, multiple, or long-lasting repetitive events, affects each of us differently. The physical effects related to trauma are known to have a direct biological effect on future health. At iThemba we have dedicated counsellors and social workers who are on standby to conduct therapeutic interventions, debriefing after a crime has been committed and conduct follow-ups to ensure the continued mental wellbeing of the client
Gender Based Violence
Gender-based violence (GBV) is a profound and widespread problem in South Africa, impacting almost every aspect of life, GBV (which is not limited to but disproportionately affects women and girls) is systemic, and deeply entrenched in institutions, cultures and traditions in South Africa. Our team of Social Workers, Social Auxiliary Workers, Victims Support Members work with victims in a way that is compassionate and informed in order to help them walk the road from victim to victor
South Africa has a well-documented history with violence. Violence that affects all ages, genders and demographics. Using therapeutic interventions and counselling we give the victims the necessary support they need to cope with the trauma. In instances where additional support is required, we refer and transfer clients to relevant organizations
